
Halloween is one of the most loved and well known holidays today. Although in modern times Halloween is the night of October 31st when children dress up in costumes and go door to door for candy, Halloween was not always celebrated like this. Halloween has a great history that dates all the way back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. Therefore, the people had traditions like lighting bonfires and dressing up in costumes to scare the spirits away.
Jackson Seefeldt in the 7th grade at Holy Spirit School has many traditions for Halloween as well. His traditions include trick-or-treating, getting a new skeleton every year, decorating his home, and going to his country club. His most memorable event that has happened during Halloween, is when an elderly man walked out of his home and offered Jackson candy while an elderly woman walked out and hit the elderly man.
Jackson’s favorite candies to receive on Halloween are Twixs and Snickers. While trick-or-treating is about getting candy, people also wear costumes just like the ancient Celtic festivals of Samhain. Jackson’s personal favorite costume was when he was a pink inflatable dinosaur.
A Halloween event Jackson attends is going to his country club where there is an award for the best family costume at the country club. In fact, Jackson and his family have won it. They won with a barbie themed costume where his parents dressed as middle-aged crisis barbies, his younger sister as a regular barbie, and Jackson dressed as Ken.
Jackson also has traditions that involve Halloween activities. One of the biggest Halloween activities he has is when Jackson and his family get a new skeleton each year for Halloween. Another thing Jackson does every year is watch a Halloween themed movie. Jackson’s favorite one he’s watched is the movie Halloween.
Amelia Bokan in 7th grade at Holy Spirit School has many traditions for Halloween. A Halloween event she has is trick-or-treating with friends and family after having pizza for dinner. She also has traditions like carving pumpkins, where she sometimes gets them with family at a pumpkin patch, watching Halloween movies, and decorating her house.
One of her Halloween activities is getting pumpkins and carving them for Halloween which also is her favorite decoration at her house. Although Amelia likes a variety of Halloween movies, her personal favorites are The Corpse Bride, The Nightmare before Christmas, and Hocus Pocus.
Her most memorable event on Halloween would be when her sister got scared and fell down while they were trick-or-treating. Her favorite candies to get while trick-or-treating are Hershey kisses and Kit-Kats.
Over the years, Amelia has had many costumes but her favorite one she has worn is goldi-locks. The places she mostly spends time with on Halloween are mainly at home and around her neighborhood. The group of people she is around with on Halloween are usually family and friends.
Andrew Franco in the 7th grade at Holy Spirit School is also one of the many people who has traditions for Halloween. His main traditions include spending time with his nephews and trick-or-treating.
The group of people he mostly spends time with on Halloween are his nephews and friends. A Halloween activity he does is playing video games with his nephews. His favorite costume is Batman and his favorite candies are Lifesavers, Swedish fish, and Sour Patch watermelons.
Andrew’s favorite memory on Halloween is when he would spend time with his uncle on Halloween before his uncle moved to Germany. His favorite Halloween movie is Casper and his favorite Halloween decorations at his home are the animatronics.
The places he mostly spends time on Halloween are his home and around in his neighborhood. An important event he does on Halloween is trick-or-treating around his neighborhood.
In conclusion, many people celebrate Halloween and have different traditions that are passed along in their families. However, while peoples traditions and practices may be different we can see that they actually have similarities that go all the way back to the ancient Celtic festivals of Samhain.
