Holy Spirit School has added a new activity for students. Odyssey of the mind was introduced to all of Holy Spirit School in the beginning august. Since then kids from the grades of kindergarten to 5th grade have been working for six months to go participate in a competition. It also pulls together kids that don’t hangout with each other to be on a team. They are normally teams of seven with one or two parent coaches. The 4th grade odyssey of the mind team has made it to states, because they are at states I decided they are experts on this. So I have interviewed a few of the seven members of the team. I have interviewed Nick Costantino, Kennedy Bruner and Rory Robison. I asked them a total of 5 questions about Odyssey of the Mind to help explain what it is.

The first question I asked was “What did you think Odyssey of the mind was about?” Kennedy thought it was just a club on building things. Rory thought it was a program that was not competitive. Nick thought it was a world full of competition in front of high school judges. From what I have gathered they thought Odyssey of the Mind was just a pretty calm thing and not as competitive as it actually is.

This led me to my next question: “ What do you do in Odyssey of the Mind?”  Kennedy and Rory both said similar things. One said it is where you build a skit and make things for your skit and the other said you only get $160 to buy things to make for your skit. Rory also said that it is a friendly competition. Nick said that it is a competition where you compete at a high school and if you place then you go to a popular city then to worlds. I think it may be more than a friendly competition if there are more levels then just one competition.

My next question was “ What is your favorite part of Odyssey of the Mind?”  All three of them have different answers. Kennedy said that her favorite part of OM is building and performing the skit. Rory said that his favorite part of OM is that he can hang out with his friends and get to know them more. And lastly Nick said that his favorite part of OM is putting in the effort to see the final result and competing against other teams. On the topic of competition my next question was “How did you feel on competition day and how did you feel about winning?”  For the first part of the question Kennedy and Nick both had a lot of nerves and Rory said that it was fun but a lot of pressure. Kennedy also said she felt her creative juices flowing and Nick also said that he thought his teammates were going to forget their lines. It is safe to say they were all excited about whinge they also felt a little shocked and going to states.

My last question was “Why do you think others should try Odyssey of the Mind?” Kennedy said that it is fun and you have a chance at winning. Rory said that it is fun even though it takes a lot of your time and you can learn more about your classmates or you can meet new people. Lastly Nick said that it is fun and you can show your personality to others. Now the fourth grade team is going to Michigan for worlds. They will be competing from teams all around the world. From interviewing Kennedy, Nick and Rory Odyssey of the Mind seems like a fun after school activity if you are up for the challenge.
